The alexandrite laser

The q-switched short-pulsed alexandrite laser has the same spectrum of indications (Indikationsbereich) as the ruby laser (Rubinlaser).

This application is especially suitable for removal of so-called accidental pigmentations (e.g. after an accident with explosives (new year's celebrations, attacks with gas pistols, etc).

In this context, it is important to point out that suspicious pigmentary lesions that might be present at birth or develop later in life should not be removed by laser!
Suspicous moles always require excision and subsequent histologic examination to rule out malignancy.
Only in very rare cases with extensive, inoperable lesions, treatment with the q-switched solid-body lasers may be tried to lighten the lesions.
